Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is type of inflammatory arthritis
that causes swelling of the joints and hands.
The majority of rheumatoid arthritis suffers eventually develop a rheumatoid
foot or hand. A rheumatoid foot
generally begins in the toes and forefoot as well as the hindfoot before
eventually moving into the ankle.
At the Orlando Orthopaedic Center our board certified
specialists provide treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, including rheumatoid
foot. Not only are our foot and ankle
specialists board certified in forefoot surgery, they are among only a few
Central Florida physicians board certified in reconstructive rear foot/ankle
surgery. If you or a loved one are
suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, turn to the experts at the Orlando
Orthopaedic Center.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment
Treatments for rheumatoid arthritis can range from medication
and exercise to surgery. Some medicines
have proven to slow the progression of the disease and some steroids have been
effective in reducing inflammation in RA patients. Stretching and exercise are extremely
important for RA patients and have proven to help maintain range of
motion.
Surgery is often necessary for patients with advanced RA of
the foot. Fusion, or arthrodesis, is a
common surgical procedure for those suffering from rheumatoid foot.
Arthroplasty, or the replacement of the ankle joint, is another option. An arthroplasty is a relatively new procedure
so it is important to keep in mind that the long term success of an arthroplasty
is yet to be determined.
