Contracture Treatment
If it is determined that a case of contracture is the result of a nerve injury or a disease of the muscle, ligament or tendon, the underlying cause must be treated as well. There are 4 contracture treatment techniques to explore with your healthcare professional(s): manual treatment, mechanical treatment, casting and/or splinting and surgery.
Manual Treatment
Manual treatment options for contractures include: stretching, heat therapy and exercise. Together these techniques can restore mobility and build critical muscle.
Mechanical Treatment
Mechanical treatment options, for contractures, refer to the use of continuous passive motion machines (CPM) to increase mobility. CPMs are often used following surgery or right after an injury and have proven to accelerate the recovery process.
Casting and/or Splinting
Casting and splinting is used to provide a consistent stretch of the affected soft tissue. After the initial cast or splint is removed, a series of casts is used to make regular adjustments in order to improve mobility over time.
Surgery
When all other treatment options have been explored, and ruled ineffective, it’s time to consider surgery. Contracture surgery includes the manipulation of the joint as the patient is under general anesthesia.
