Chondrosarcoma
Treatment
Treatment for chondrosarcoma is dependent on several
factors. Because chemotherapy and
radiation are not generally very effective in treating chondrosarcoma, surgery
is typically the most efficient treatment method. Physicians will often recommend follow up
chemotherapy treatments to reduce the risk of the chondrosarcoma metastasizing
to other areas of the body.
Bone cancer treatment is a very involved process which
requires the skill and expertise of talented orthopaedic surgeons and
specialists. In each case the goal is to
not only remove and stop the spread of chondrosarcoma but to enable the patient
to return to a healthy and active lifestyle.
This is most often achieved through one of the following limb salvage
surgical techniques:
Allograft
When surgeons perform an allograft any known cancerous cells
are removed and replaced with tissue from a donor.
Autograft
In an autograft the surgeon removes any detected cancerous
cells and also extracts healthy bone tissue from the patient. The healthy cells are then used to replace
the removed cancerous tissue. Surgeons
commonly harvest the bone tissue from them fibula.
Prosthetics
In some cases surgeons depend on prosthetic implants to
replace the removed cancerous tissue.
Modern science has made it possible for many patients to receive
expandable implants which have also proven to be a viable limb salvage option.
