Ewing's sarcoma is a malignant (cancerous) tumor which
generally develops in the bone and, in some rare cases, the soft tissue. Unlike most cancers, the type of cell from
which Ewing's sarcoma develops is unknown.

Ewing's Sarcoma
Treatment
X-rays, MRIs and other imaging technologies are used to
examine a patient when Ewing's sarcoma is suspected. A biopsy is then performed to determine if
the detected tumor is in fact malignant.
Once a case has been diagnosed as Ewing's sarcoma a treatment plan which
includes chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery is typically administered.
Chemotherapy
A patient undergoes chemotherapy to not only reduce the size
of the tumor but to kill any undetected cancer cells that may have metastasized.
Surgery
Surgery is performed to remove the tumor and any additional
metastatic lesions. Once the tumor(s)
have been removed the surgeon may replace the removed bone and/or tissue with
bone grafts and artificial implants to reinforce the effected bone(s). Additional reconstruction surgeries may be
necessary, especially in growing children.
Radiation
Radiation is used to reduce the likelihood that the tumor
will reoccur. Radiation is sometimes
used in place of surgery when the probability of surgical complications is
deemed too high.
