Include:
-
Tenderness, redness and/or swelling
- Bone Pain
- Bone fractures, often after a routine movement
or activity
Osteosarcoma
Treatment
Osteosarcoma treatment generally requires a combination of
aggressive chemotherapy and surgery.
Only an orthopaedic specialist is equipped to outline an optimal
treatment plan for patients suffering from osteosarcoma.
A biopsy will be
performed as soon as possible to determine if the tumor is in fact
malignant. Once malignancy has been
confirmed chemotherapy will be administered in an effort to reduce the size of
the tumor and kill any cancer cells that may have metastasized. Once chemotherapy is completed the surgery is
performed to remove the remaining tumor.
This method is known as limb-salvage as it often enables doctors to
effectively save the patient’s effected limb.
In very rare cases amputation is performed to eliminate the chances of an
osteosarcoma reoccurrence.
Osteosarcoma
Prognosis
The long term survival rate for patients suffering from osteomyelitis
is extremely high. The survival rate is
greatly reduced in cases in when the tumor metastasized to the lungs. This is why it is very important to seek
medical attention immediately when symptoms occur.
