Physical and Occupational Therapy Information

Goal of Rehabilitation

Physical or Occupational therapy may be ordered by one of our orthopaedic surgeons as part of your continued care. The goal of therapy is to restore a patient back to their previous function. A patient may need therapy to regain the ability to walk or do activities of daily living. Some patients need skilled therapy to get back to work or their favorite recreational activities. Some patients need specialized strengthening and agility training to return to sports. Each treatment program is tailored to meet the specific goals of our patients.

What to Expect At Therapy

Initially, you will be evaluated by a physical therapist or occupational therapist to identify specific limitations and problems. This will allow us to establish goals and individualize your plan of care. Your therapist will explain the required treatment and expected outcomes along with what your therapy sessions will entail.

The evaluation and subsequent treatments may include a wide variety of therapeutic interventions. For example, modalities such as: ultrasound, electrical stimulation, hot/cold therapy, paraffin, iontophoriesis, and traction are used to treat pain, swelling and tissue dysfunction. Manual techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization and passive range of motion are used to treat pain, range of motion deficits, and musculoskeletal problems. Therapeutic exercise and activities work on strength, balance, agility and coordination to restore optimal function.

We also work directly with patients who need special payment arrangements. If you have any questions, please call our rehabilitation department.
