National Center for Sports Safety PREPARE Course

For Information, please call Ron Esteban, MS, ATC/L at 407.849.6880.

As an NCSS affiliate, Orlando Orthopaedic Center is committed to setting the standard in sports safety education in an effort to reduce injuries and to in turn, make youth athletes safer.  According to the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under receive medical treatment for sports injuries each year and nearly half of these injuries were preventable.  In addition, statistics from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) show that more than half of all sports injuries occur during practice.

The PREPARE course was developed by NCSS in conjunction with the NATA in response to statistics such as these.  PREPARE covers everything form minor injuries, like blisters, nose bleeds and ankle sprains, to life-threatening situations such as head and neck injuries.  The course focuses on seven key areas: emergency planning; heat and cold illnesses; emergency recognition; medical considerations; principles of first aid; head, neck and facial injuries; and warm-up and cool-down.  All course participants receive a Certificate of Completion and a Sports Safety Patch once they complete the course.
