Educational Summary
Course Description
This program focuses on evidence based practices for use of the latest technology and surgical procedures used to treat orthopaedic conditions associated with musculoskeletal trauma of the knee and elbow. It includes a brief overview of the related anatomy, as well as rehabilitation considerations for non-operative treatment options and post-surgical therapy protocols. Common injuries as well as the relevance and rationale of CrossFit training in athletes will be reviewed and discussed. Various disciplines of ACL care will be discussed including injury prevention, nutrition strategies and psychological factors. Plus, on-field preparation and management of the critically injured athlete will be presented. Program content is designed to assist healthcare providers with acquiring the skills and knowledge to provide quality care and improve patient outcomes.

The material covered by the 2019 15 th Annual Cutting Edge Concepts in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Seminar includes domains 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the BOC Role Delineation/Practice Analysis, 7th edition (Injury and Illness Prevention and Wellness Promotion, Examination, Assessment and Diagnosis, Immediate and Emergency Care and Therapeutic Intervention). According to the education levels described by the Professional Development Committee of the NATA, the following continuing education course is considered to be Essential and/or Advanced Level to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants.

Course Description (Athletic Trainers Only)
As athletic trainers broaden their scope of practice, they must be prepared to respond to a wide variety of traumatic injuries and situations that may require the ability to critically manage a scene with multiple patients, identify those patients who need the most critical interventions, and respond with rapid intervention to massive hemorrhage to prevent catastrophic results. The use of evidence-based tourniquet and wound packing techniques and rapid evaluation triage methods will dramatically improve survival rates for critically injured patients. Adequate preparation should be combined with clinical expertise to utilize skills and equipment to minimize casualties and prevent death. This session examines the evidence for, application of, and interrelatedness of triage protocols and critical interventions: tourniquets (commercial and improvised), wound packing and hemostatic agents.
Educational Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify patients in need of the most critical interventions during a traumatic situation.
- Participants will be able to understand the role of and interrelatedness of emergency triage procedures for the critically injured.
- Participants will be able to discuss the evidence and application for tourniquets, wound packing and hemostatic agents for the critically injured patient.

Course Description
Athletic injuries present several challenges; including loss of sport participation present and future, shortened window for skill and physical development, and negative effect on individual well-being. Research explores risk factors and programs to limit the incidence of injury during athletic participation. Healthcare practitioners can aid in reducing risk of injury, as well as improving athletic performance. This workshop aims to explore various risk factors contributing to athletic injuries and methods to address injury risk. We will utilize the best available evidence to improve understanding of neuromuscular programs designed for injury prevention and improving athletic performance. Specifically, by exploring mechanisms, dosage, and impacts on general athletic performance and sport specificity.
