2019 High School Sports Physicals
Every year the Orlando Orthopaedic Center Foundation partners with area schools to provide pre-participation high school sports physicals to their students. As a fundraiser for the school athletic departments, the schools charge a nominal fee for each physical.
Physicians and sports medicine specialists from Orlando Orthopaedic Center donate more than 250 hours of their time to provide sports physicals to students throughout Central Florida from April to August. Many of the students would not be able to afford these necessary sports screenings if it weren’t for the reduced costs offered at these events.
To learn more, contact your school’s athletic department directly or call Andy Reber, sports medicine outreach coordinator for Orlando Orthopaedic Center, at (407) 254-2501 or email him here.

Workshops
EBP Workshop – Wound Care Management during a Mass Casualty Emergency: An Evidence-Based Approach for Triage, Tourniquets, Wound Packing and Chest Seals
Edward J. Strapp, TP-C/FP-C, NRP, LAT, ATC
Location: Salon 1
Time: 3:05 – 5:05 PM
Format: Clinical/live event
Course Description
As athletic trainers broaden their scope of practice, they must be prepared to respond to a wide variety of traumatic injuries and situations that may require the ability to critically manage a scene with multiple patients, identify those patients who need the most critical interventions, and respond with rapid intervention to massive hemorrhage to prevent catastrophic results. The use of evidence-based tourniquet and wound packing techniques and rapid evaluation triage methods will dramatically improve survival rates for critically injured patients. Adequate preparation should be combined with clinical expertise to utilize skills and equipment to minimize casualties and prevent death. This session examines the evidence for, application of, and interrelatedness of triage protocols and critical interventions: tourniquets (commercial and improvised), wound packing and hemostatic agents.
Target Audience
- Certified Athletic Trainers
Educational Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify patients in need of the most critical interventions during a traumatic situation.
- Participants will be able to understand the role of and interrelatedness of emergency triage procedures for the critically injured.
- Participants will be able to discuss the evidence and application for tourniquets, wound packing and hemostatic agents for the critically injured patient.

Healthcare practitioners can aid in reducing risk of injury, as well as improving athletic performance. This workshop aims to explore various risk factors contributing to athletic injuries and methods to address injury risk. We will utilize the best available evidence to improve understanding of neuromuscular programs designed for injury prevention and improving athletic performance. Specifically, by exploring mechanisms, dosage, and impacts on general athletic performance and sport specificity.
Educational Objectives:
- Common risk factors for sport injuries
- The best evidenced methods for reducing risk of athletic injuries
- Potential mechanisms neuromuscular programs have on injury prevention
- Prescribing frequency, intensity, and duration of neuromuscular programs
- Adapting programs for general physical performance and sport specificity

3rd Annual Family Fitness Fest: Helping Underserved Kids Get Active
The Orlando Orthopaedic Center Foundation and Sports 4 the Kids co-hosted Central Florida’s largest Saturday morning workout, the 3rd Annual Family Fitness Fest on Saturday, August 25, at the Sanford Civic Center.
The free indoor community event welcomed more than 500 attendees (including 40 families in transition transported to the event by LYNX) who participated in diverse fitness activities aimed at improving strength and agility for kids of all ages and activity levels. In all, 12 engaging fitness stations offered participants an opportunity to compete in unique, fun physical challenges.
“Our mission is to serve the youth of Central Florida and those who may not be able to afford to get involved in organized sports,” says Randy S. Schwartzberg, M.D., president of the Orlando Orthopaedic Center Foundation. “We have a lot of opportunities here today to sign kids up for organized sports leagues, to give them a workout, and to give away a ton of sporting equipment.”
